Online Poker: New Opportunities

The game of poker has become a multi-billion dollar industry.  As a result of its popularity and increased visibility, poker has been favorably introduced to a much wider cross-section of new players.  In fact, with the advent of online poker venues, the resulting explosion has only served to fuel the poker phenomenon even further. Indeed, online poker has incorporated a number of promotional features that have broadened the games appeal.

It is interesting to note that online poker rooms have an appeal to players at a time when live casinos and independent poker venues are limiting or even eliminating poker playing opportunities.  Traditional casinos, for example, can actually realize more profit by eliminating poker rooms and adding more traditional games such as slots.  Poker, for live action venues, have to establish a high rake (a time charge for playing) in order to achieve reasonable profit margins.

Online poker venues, while also charging a reasonable rake, do not have the traditional overhead costs that are found at live action venues (such as the cost of maintaining a physical location).  As a result, online poker venues can have as many “tables” as needed to accommodate whatever number of players that are available to play (or the server can manage).  Online poker venues, as a result, are able to charge much lower table and tournament entry fees.  It is not uncommon to see entry rates as low as $0.10.  In fact, many online venues offer players freeroll tournaments.  These are poker tournaments in which there is no entry free at all.

Another nice feature that players will find at a majority of online poker venues is the poker schools.  These are often comprehensive tutorials that even poker veterans can find useful.  Essentially, these tutorials are there to assist players overcome the learning curve that is inherent in mastering the nuances of the game of poker.  Where playing at a live action event may be incredibly intimidating if a player is not familiar with the games; playing online poker, in contrast, can be a learning experience.  For certain, this feature allows players to gain valuable game experience without the risk of losing one’s bankroll.

There is also a matter of convenience with online poker venues.  Obviously, players have the ability to play right from the comfort of their own homes.  This alleviates the need to find and travel to physical locations to play.  Additionally, with the introduction of satellite tournaments, online poker players have the opportunity to play into the large, live action poker events such as the World Series of Poker.  Previously, it was necessary for players interested in these major events to find live, feeder tournaments in their locale (or travel to one).  While doing so is still very popular, playing online is just as feasible.

Basically, online poker has given players of every skill level additional opportunities and features to enjoy the game of poker.  Interestingly, this has not seemed to diminish the popularity of live action events in the slightest.  In fact, one could convincingly argue that online poker has assisted in the overall popularity of the game.  Whatever the case may be, online poker provides players with a wider array of gaming options.
